Social Media for Activists

Social media platforms are online spaces where people can share interests, activities and information within an interactive community. Social media can be an incredibly effective way to share information and communicate within a community and to reach out to fellow activists around the world. Amnesty International USA is most active on two of the largest social media sites: Facebook and Twitter. Amnesty UK maintains active Instagram and Pinterest accounts. Human Rights Watch and Students for a Free Tibet UK both have dynamic and active Tumblr blogs. (For more on Pinterest and Tumblr, see Digital Curation.) These represent just some of the popular social media platforms available on the Web. Each platform has particular assets and strengths and can be used to reach specific audiences.
